Subject: Sansoni in Avezzano/Compotosto Abruzzo, Italy
We visited blood relatives in Avezzano and Compotosto Abruzzo, Italy three years or so ago.
We correspond regularly and love them dearly. Our surname got changed to Sansone by Ellis Island clerks and the tendency of Abruzzo natives to pronounce by clipping off the last letter of a given name. SUN ZONE became Sansone in America. Altho there are many Sansone in Italy. They are spread out all over Italy. Our family name in Italy is Sansoni and they are also spread out over a large area, but not one family named Sansoni is in the South of Italy.
We are told that Sansoni originated in Milan area, and are all thru the north of Italy and there are a large contingent of Sansoni in and arround Rome. There is a large Sansoni-Colins dictionary (Italian/English) that is famous in Italy. Our particular immediate family is from Compotosto, in Abruzzo and some are in the Rome area, and the city of Avezzano. There may be many others, as my father had 7 brothers and sisters and they surely had children. My fathers father was Vittorio Sansoni and he married Elizabeta Ciombotti in Compotosto.
