The story I learned was that the name began as French "Galtier", (From Gaul)later added the "i" Galtieri, later some dropped the G, Altieri, some dropped the G and never added the i, Altier....... story goes; eight brothers fought against Garabaldi and all were killed, only the children survived of which many immigrated to America.
