The name might also derive from the union of Mutini and Janus in honor of god Priapus and the two-faced god Ianus, or from Mons-tignarius=Mon(te)tignario which means mount rich in timber, wood necessary for the shipbuilding industry of Porto di Cerrano situated just below. Or also from the Latin words Mons and amnis, meaning mount and river, which is explained by the presence of two rivers, Calvano and Foggette. According to some sources the population of Mutignano is derived from a colony of Schiavoni (Slavs). Mutignano was a suburb of nearby Hatria Picena (Atri) and therefore was dominated by Goths, Lombards, and the Acquaviva family.
