Salve, Deb, I went to Ortucchio 10 years ago to see the village my father talked about, but never returned to. It was the greatest event of my life. My wife and I found distant relatives, and have returned at least once a year since that first trip. i know the village well, and the history. You may not know that the biggest thing that happened there was an earthquake in 1915. Most people who were killed were in church, I believe Saint Anthony's. There is a castle and a medieval church called Sant Oranto. I encourage everyone I talk to to make the trip to Italy. You will understand yourself better, and I think that is especially true of Abruzzesi. You would see the geopgraphy, and can imagine the conditions they lived in, and some still do, and this will help you to understand the characteristics of you grandparents, parents, and yourself. It is a beautiful place, and if you too find relatives they would treat you like you are a sister to them. The whole village is aware of our presence when we visit. It is just fantastic. Ma, devi imparare un po Italiano, perche non parlanno Inglese ad Ortucchio. If you would like more information, e-mail me. Tony : What a fantastic site! My grandfather Piacentino di Cioccio was from Ortucchio; came to the US as a little boy in 1893. His wife (Mary Ferrante) may also be from the L'Aquila region...I'm not sure. : di Cioccio seems to be a common name in Abruzzi--does anyone have any info about the family or about the village of Ortucchio? : Thanks, : Deb
