: : I'm new here, and have read many of the past posts. It sure seems to me that many of our Abruzzi ancestors settled in the coal mining areas of Pennsylvania. My family lived in north central PA---the DuBois area.

: : I wonder if coal mines recruited poor farmers from Abruzzo to come, or why so many ended up in Penn? Perhaps they still wanted to be in a mountainous, snowy area?

: : Does anyone know anything about this?

: : Thanks

Dear Deb,
My family was also from the Abruzzo region. I know that they lived in New York City when they first came to this country, around 1889. But by 1910 when my grandfather was born, they were living in DuBois, PA, where my great grandfather and more than likely the rest of his family were coal miners.

The family names were Finamore and DePerro. My great grandfather was born in Pescasseroli, and his wife, Sabina DePerro was born in L'Aquila. Have you run into any of these town names in your research? I was wondering if they all might have even come from the same villages?! You can email me directly at Andrea_Maxwell- AT - msn.com if you would like! Thanks!!
