Subject:   Dicenso/Dicenso

My Father was born in the late 1800's and spelled his last name with an s. I asked him why some of the Di Censo's use a z. His explanation was that when the old timers wrote an s it was open and curved so that it resembled a z and people at the immigration centers took it to be a z. I've heard different accounts and am not yet convinced either way. I believe it's the same name because I know of one familly where one brother spelled with a z and the other with an s.
When you pronounce the name as they do in Italy with the chenso it seems to sound easier using the s . The z in my oppinion is used mostly by Americans because since they do not pronounce the Ce as Ch seems to come out easier as Cenzo. I could be all wet and am open to other explantions. Incidentally I was in Sulmona and the signs pointing to the location where my parents lived were spelled with an s.
