: Salve! : Recently I was researching 1818 in my father's town of Mutignano / Pineto. There were an extraordinary number of deaths that year (4 to 5 times the usual). Entire families were dying. Was there an epidemic or some type of health emergency? The deaths were happening pretty consistently each month. Any input would be appreciated. Grazie! Hello Fred, this happened in many municipalities, especially in the Province of L'Aquila, bordering Rieti, and in the area of Teramo-Roseto. People mostly died of hunger, denutrition and connected disease. Bad weather began in 1815, harvest in 1815 was very scarce, and the situation worsened up to winter 1817. The winter was also freezing, and that exterminated many families. The Abruzzo2000 genealogy team found while researching some parish books the diary of a priest for those years. You can read it in the Ezine section, in the November 2000 Issue (reserved for Club members, you'll need username and password): http://www.abruzzo2000.com/members/awc/
