I am trying to search out our family (surname of Planamenta) who my father was told were from Castiglione in the Province of L'Aquila. My grandfather, Enrico Planamenta, emigrated to East 9th Street in the Greenpoint Section of Brooklyn NY in the early 1900s, possibly 1903, where he married my grandmother, Louise Castriana. My grandmothers mothers' maiden name was Leonardo. Following the old Italian tradition, grandma and grandpa "were promised to each other at birth". Hence the purpose of my grandfather's trip! They had seven children. These seven children, their children, and their children's children are the only Planamenta's I can find in the USA. My grandfather's brother, Dominic Planamenta, also emigrated to NY, but later moved to South America in the 1920s, never to be heard of, again. My grandfather's sister, Filomena, who had been a nun in Italy, left the convent, and also emigrated to Brooklyn, NY, and stayed with my grandparents, who later moved to Ossining, NY. From Ellis Island's many manifests, I have found a number of people, possibly cousins, whose reported destination was the home of my grandparents in Ossining. There was a cousin, Pete Sfamori or Sfamouri (not sure of the spelling) whose wife's name was Rose and they had two children, Daniel and Louis (the latter who married a May Diaz). My grandfather owned a hauling company, but died in his early 40s, the results of a severe stroke.

The name Planamenta here in the states is rare, but we were told by friends who had visited Italy many years ago that the name Planamenta was as common as is Smith or Jones here in the states. Unfortunately, we moved from that area years ago and have since lost contact with those neighbors, so I cannot inquire as to where they had visited in Italy. Some people say that the name may be Greek, although I have reservations about this.

If anyone has any information pertaining to this, I would be ever so grateful to hear from you.

Thanks!!!
