I have been "over" several times and was there for two weeks in late April to paint and research. I got "nati" info in baptismal records on over 50 Lorentes (1834-1886). Some entries mention the names Merucci and Notarangelo. I'll never forget the entries inked by a Merucci whose handwriting was more precise than most printing I have seen. You should know too that my own grandfather's two brothers and sister left Cardiff and moved to Scotland to work in the jute factories. I met several of their children a few years ago in Forfar and Dundee. Other Belmontesi Lorentes, including "Il Barone" went to Bewley and Inverness, including a charming remote cousin who has returned to Belmonte and lives there now. "Il Barone" was certainly no blue-blood, by the way. It was just his nickname. Are you aware that in the tax list on wine for 1867 a Francesco Merucci is listed in Prima Classe, and a Saverio Notarangelo in Seconda Classe. The surnames also appear in Terza Classe and Quarta Classe. Notarangelo and Lorente appear in Quinta Classe - the people who did own "mobile and immobile" so much as they were 'owned' in the near fuedal society of the day. There is only one mention of a Lorente extant in the Belmonte cemetery. happily, she is buried with her husband - a Notarangelo. My phone number in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada is (613) 432-2486. My e-mail is lorente- AT - sympatico.ca. I'd love to hear from you. Call collect. Agape, Follow Ups:
