on 01/17/03 at 10:13 PM My name is DAVID LORENTE; I was born in Canada. My father and his many brothers and sisters were born in Cardiff, Wales. Because my father came to Canada as a child migrant at age 15 he never had a birth certificate. I found it in 1980, long after Dad died, and discovered that I and my grandparents were Italian. I have since found out that my grandfather NASCENZO LORENTE was born in 1865 in Belmonte Castello and my grandmother, MARIA MANETTA, whom he married in Montpellier, France in 1892, was born in Pignataro Interamna. NASCENZO II was the son of ANTONIO LORENTE (born 1832)of Belmonte who, in 1859, married ROSA MARIA FARGNOLI. They had at least 7 other children including ANNA MARIA who married SERVIO NOTARANGELO, and ANGELO SALVATORE, DOMENICO ANTONIO and LORETTA. The last three went to Cardiff to live with NASCENZO ca 1895. ANTONIO was the son of NASCENZO LORENTE I who was born in 1799 and married MARIA VETTRAINO in 1820. They had more than a dozen children. NASCENZO I's father was MICHELANGELO LORENTE (born 17??) who died in 1817. He was married to DOMENICA FORTUNA who died in 1857. They had at least 5 children. MICHELANGELO's father was FRANCESCO LORENTE, a native of Gaeta, who married VINCENZA SOAVE of Belmonte and settled there. They had three children: MICHELANGELO, DOIMENICO ANTONIO and GIOVANNA ROCCA. There are five LORENTE Heads of Family on the Wine Tax List of 1867 - all are in Quinta Classe; they were those who had few possessions and were rather owned than owners. (Maybe that's why they left.) They were, in pecking order: #82 ANTONIO (my great grandfather), #146 GIUSEPPA LORENTI (vedova), There were many LORENTE's in Cardiff in the late 1800's and early 1900's; there was even an Italian order of priests there. About 1906 my grandfather moved to London and then Paris where his wife's family was living. His brothers and sisters moved to Dundee, Scotland where their in-laws lived - the IANNARELLI and IANARETTI also of Belmonte Castello. I have connected with and met my LORENTE cousins in England, Scotland, France, Canada, South Africa and Australia. The last LORENTE, I believe, to live in Belmonte was ARTURO (IL BARONE)who died there just after the war. When I found out I was Italian in 1980 I took nine lessons in the language by correspondence from a university and then went there on a pilgrimage. I have been back twice and will be there again in April 2003 to paint a few pictures and meet my beautiful cousin Carmella and the wonderful people - the 'Belmundi' of my ancestral home. David Lorente PS. The Name LORENTE is a corruption of LAURENTI which was the name of the people who lived in LAURENTUM (south of present day Ostia) when Aeneas landed there more than two millennia ago. LAURENTUM comes from the Latin 'laurus' or Laurel tree which grew in abundance there. Aeneas buried his nursemaid GAETA where the city that bears her name is today in what used to be South Laurentum. PPS I am English-speaking but also speak French and can understand Italian, especially if I have a dictionary at hand. I should be glad to hear from anyone with Belmonte connections.
