I am just starting out on my Italian grandparents. I've been searching all the regular on line sources - Ancestry, familysearch.org, search engines, etc - without much luck. I only have US census info, a couple of entries from city directories for Providence, RI and copies of death certificates from the RI State Archives. Still to be explored: More city directories, RI State Censuses, Itrani microfilms at our local FHC.

All I have so far:

Giuseppe FORNARO: b. 1865 Itri, Italy d. 31 Oct 1941 Providence, RI. Came to the US either 1892 or 1893.

His Parents: Angelo Antonio FORNARO of Itri and Maria Grazia DI VONA of Itri.

Known Siblings: Benedetto FORNARO who also came to Providence and lived near Giuseppe. Benedetto's wife was Maria C. nee unknown. Ancestry's RI deaths database lists "Civota" as Bennedetto's wife in one entry so this might be the "C" in Maria's name.

Rachela FORNARO nee CANNELLA b. abt. 1870 Italy d. 10 Feb 1930 Providence, RI Came to the US 1893.

Her Parents: Luigi CANNELLA of Italy and Maria Civita CANNELLA of Italy. I don't know if this is a case of a lady being CANNELLA both before and after marriage or if the wrong information was given for "mother's name" on Rachela's death certificate.

Children of Giuseppe and Rachela, all deceased:
- Angelina "Annie" b. 1891 Itri d. RI Spouse: Galdino MARTORELLI m. 12 Sept 1912
- Carolina "Clara" b. 1893 d. RI Spouse: Ottavio "Sam" CELLEMME m. 21 Feb 1914
- Maria A. b. 16 May 1894 Provdence, RI d. RI Spouse: Bernado PESCOSOLIDO m. 12 Aug 1914
- Luigi Pasquale b. 6 Jun 1895 Providence, RI d. 18 Feb 1956 Cranston(?), RI m. Sarah nee unknown
- Genoveffa Olympia "Molly" b. 1 Jan 1897 Providence, RI d. Nov 1977 North Providence, RI Spouse: Michael DENARDO m. 9 Feb 1920
- Rosalina L. "Rose" b. 4 Jan 1899 Providence, RI d. 15 Aug 1973 Providence, RI Spouse: Lorenzo PROTENA m. 10 Oct 1920
- Florentino "Fred" b. 17 Sept 1900 Providence, RI d. 28 May 1984 North Providence, RI Spouse: Mary SILVA
- Marie Jane "Mary Jane" b. 3 Sept 1903 Providence, RI d. 3 Mar 1970 RI Spouse: Benjamin SABETTA
- Elveria Beatrice b. 14 May 1905 Providence, RI d. 13 Feb 1974 Spencer, MA Spouse: Joseph BOWES
- Alfredo Joseph "Sparky" b. 23 Mar 1907 Providence, RI d. 19 Dec 1993 North Providence, RI Spouse: Living
- Giovanni" "Johnny b. 18 Sept 1908 Providence, RI d. Jun 1968 North Providence, RI Spouse: Anna FEOLE
- Antonio "Stone" 30 Apr 1910 Providence, RI Aug 1978 North Providence, RI Spouse: Living

Burial location, fortunately, I know. Giuseppe and Rachela's male children, including my father, and their spouses are all together in the same plot. I will need to check the stone for exact death dates where I have only months. The ladies will be a problem if I don't have the death date or an incorrect date. FYI anyone looking at a RI Catholic cemetery: Providence Diocese Cemeteries ONLY have the people in their cemeteries listed by death date with no cross reference by name.

The marriage year for Giuseppe and Rachela I figured from the birth of their first child would be sometime in 1890 or 1891.

Rachela's DC says only "Italy" for places of birth, no towns. I'm hoping and assuming Itri is her and her parents' birthplace, as well.

I don't know where Giuseppe and Rachela entered the US. Some folks came into the Port of Providence but Giuseppe and Rachela came right around the time Ellis Island began operating.

I have found one tantilizing entry on ellisisland.org for Carolina FORNARO age 4 months, arriving aboard the "Massilia" 15 Apr 1893. Unless this is a coincidence, this would be my father's second oldest sister who was born right around the time Rachela left for the US. None of the other names who should be with her appear under FORNARO or any of about 20 or so spelling variations for FORNARO that the Ellis Is. site provides.

Unfortunately, when I pull up the original ship manifest images, I get the manifest for another ship enitrely. And while the text version is for the correct ship, out of 137 pages, only 28 pages show up and none contain Carolina so I am unable to determine who she was traveling with in order to confirm that this is my father's sister and to see if Giuseppe came before Rachela and the babies or accomapnied them.

Giuseppe and Rachela, apparently, never strayed from the Federal Hill section of Providence, RI. This was one of the big Italian areas in RI. In 1895 they are boarders in a house on Acorn St. The next year, 1896, they are boarding in a house on Tefft St where they still resided as of the 1900 census. 1910 they are living in one of the two homes that would eventually belong to Giuseppe on Tower St. Both Tower St. and Tefft St. as well as portions of Acorn St. no longer exist due to the construction of I-95 in the late 1950's and the 6/10 connector.

I would like to find out:

The marriage information for my grandparents - date, place of marriage, witnesses, etc.

Birth town and DOB for Rachela, and daughters Angelina and Carolina.

DOB for Giuseppe.

Christening dates, place and sponsors for Giuseppe, Rachela, Angelina, and Carolina.

Birth, christening, marriage, death information for Luigi CANNELLA, Maria Civita CANNELLA, Angelo Antonio FORNARO, Maria Grazia DI VONA.

Parents for Luigi, the two Marias and Angelo and any other information farther back from there.

Siblings for Giuseppe and Rachela. And, hopefully, the whereabouts for the decendants of these siblings.

The name and address of the local newspaper for Itri so that I might write to the letters to the editor section in an attempt to regain contact with any family that might exist or correspond with some who knows of my family.

Thanks to all who might be able to help me.
Linda Peloquin nee Fornaro
