Researching the Volturno valleyHeritage Forums: Province of Isernia |
|
Posted by Wendell Murray on December 30, 2006 at 15:00:09: This is a re-posting of the primary lines I am researching. My family is from the Volturno valley in the province of Isernia in Molise, primarily from the communes of Pizzone and Castel San Vincenzo. I also have a direct ancestors from Colli a Volturno and from Picinisco (specifically, the hamlet of San Giuseppe, now a part of Picinisco) in Frosinone. Following are the surnames of my direct ancestors from the area: Di Julio (Di Iulio), Di Benedetto, Vacca, Di Iorio, Di Cristofano, Cozzone, Di Vito, Barone, D'Amico, Martino, Gualano, Notardonato, Ferri, Salvatore, and Faccenda. My family made the first of their voyages to America in 1891 where -- like many from the Volturno valley -- they settled in Chicago. They returned to Italy a few years later, then to France to the town of Chateaurenard in Provence. This area around Avignon, like Chicago, has many immigrants from the Volturno valley. My grandfather's sister stayed in Chateaurenard and had her family there. She married a Jannotta (Iannotta), also from Castel San Vincenzo. I have cousins in Chateaurenard and Avignon with the surname Jannotta. The rest of the family returned to America in the first decade of the 1900s. Of course, I'm interested in communicating with others researching in these areas. Happy New Year! Follow Ups:
