My great grandfather was a "foundling" and was GIVEN a name, Gabriele Dion? Dione? I recently found someone who said the name may have been chosen as a result of the baby crying, or whatever. This person said that there was a word in dialect meaning "crying", or referred to "crying from hunger" that sounded like dion/dione? Does this sound familiar to anyone who still speaks in the "dialect" of the Abruzzi?
