Your mother was right. Until about 40 years ago, Molise, with capital Campobasso, was a Province of the region called "Abruzzi and Molise". After that period, Molise was administratively separated and is now a region in its own right, with capital Campobasso. The Province of Isernia was also later included, taking municipalities from the territory of Campobasso
