The Royal House of Savoy earned the scorn of most Italians, communist and non-communist alike, when the "royals" left Italy in a hurry as the Germans approached Rome. Consequently, the Italians fought the Nazi bravely without the leadership of the King and his family. No wonder the Italian people voted in a referendum to dump the cowardly monarchy and declare a republic. It seems that the only war hero among the House of Savoy was the Princess Mafalda who died in the Buchenwald concentration camp on August 29, 1944. The Italian Republic honored her with a postal stamp in 1997.
This is the Italian webpage with her story and news of the issue of her stamp.
