Origins of "Pesa" name?

Hi,

I am looking for more information about the origins of my family name, "Pesa". My great-grandfather, James Pesa, emigrated to the United States from Pietrabonddante, Campobaso, Molise, Italy. I have confirmation--including through this website--that there are several "Pesa"s in that area and the name appears in other places as well (Such as "Val di Pisa" in Tuscany). But the strange thing is, it seems there are more "Pesa"s in Hungary, Yugoslavia, and throughout the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

What I want to know is, are these two totally seperate lineages that just coincidentally have the same spelling, or do they have common ancestors if you trace their history back far enough? I don't speak Italian, but "Pesa" always seemed a strange spelling for an Italian word to me. I used to think that our name had been changed from "Pisa" at some point but now I know better. If you have any information that might be helpful, I would greatly appreciate it. My great-grandfather's name and birthplace are as far back as I can trace my family history and I would very much like to unravel more of this mystery.
